THE transformation of Klaksvík from a small regional hub to a nationally connected business centre will take some time to complete, but its contribution to the national economy has never been in doubt.

For over 75 years Klaksvík has been the principal fishing harbour in the Faroe Islands, generating about 30 per cent of the nation’s total fish exports. This is vitally important when one considers that 98 per cent of Faroese imports are bought with the earnings of its fishing industry.

 

In addition, Klaksvík contains one of the largest fish processing plant in the Faroe Islands as well as the slaughtery for one of its major salmon farms.

 

In the coming years, the people of Klaksvík will see a shift of focus in the town’s economy. While fisheries and fish processing will remain the largest currency earner, other sectors will be developed – notably industry and tourism.

 

A turning point for Klaksvík was the opening of the Ánir Cargo Terminal. This has allowed the port to compete with larger terminals elsewhere and to fulfil the potential of its exceptionally sheltered location.

Development
With the opening of the Leirvík tunnel, Klaksvík is physically linked with the rest of the Faroe Islands and can now be considered one of its key ports. Several developments are under way to exploit this symbiosis, including a new industrial park located by the tunnel entrance.

 

In addition, Klaksvík is exploiting its potential as a first-class tourist destination. While the new terminal offers improved facilities for cruise ships, the town will soon be home to one of the country’s largest and most exciting retail and entertainment complexes.

 

The Faroese have always looked north for the solitude and beauty of the northern islands. Now, there are many more reasons to visit Klaksvík.
